Are you ready to start gardening, or looking for some extra help to take your garden to the next level?
We support gardeners and home cooks, bakers, and herbal medicine makers with custom garden design and coaching services and personalized herbal remedy and recipe guides for edible and herbal gardens, based on the principles of permaculture garden design.
Whether you live in a city apartment with little to no outdoor space, have a bit of room in the suburbs, or a spacious backyard in the country, we want to help you grow the kitchen garden of your dreams - the kind you can harvest from on a daily and weekly basis to make fresh healthy meals and herbal medicines.
Looking to explore herbal and food preservation techniques to have home-grown foods and medicines during all the year's seasons? We can help with that too.
Disclaimer: Our design and coaching services offer educational information, not medical nor nutritional advice. Please consult a doctor or dietician if you have specific health concerns.
We get it. You've started to learn more about how the food system works and you're ready to start eating and living in a way that's in line with your values, in a way that puts both the humans in the food system and the earth first. But where the hell do you start?
We've been there too, and we've got you covered. One of the easiest ways to start aligning your food choices with values that center you and your family's health, your community's economic well-being, and is friendly to the earth, is by starting your own garden and shopping for local foods -- and then, actually eating, cooking, and preserving what you grow and buy in your kitchen at home. There's nothing like a fresh cherry tomato off the vine in August, picking blueberries barefoot in July, taking a raw bite of the first sugar snap peas of the season in May and June while you're picking a bowl full to sauté for dinner that night, or plucking fresh herbs the minute before you chop them as the perfect complement to top off your dish. And we want to share the magic of those garden and culinary experiences with you.
If you want to get started on your own, check out our blog and podcast for info, tips, and tricks on gardening, recipes, herbal remedies, and to learn more about the intersection between the food we eat, its environmental impact, and the way we can all help eat our way to the world we want to live in.
But if you're looking for a bit of help along the way, whether that's getting started from scratch, or taking your garden and ways to use your produce to the next level -- keep reading, we've got you there too.
What we offer:
Step 1: Send us an inquiry
If you're ready to commit to making your garden a success this season, fill out our inquiry form to let us know a bit about your gardening experience, how comfortable you are in the kitchen, the top 3 to 5 most important values that you're looking to integrate into your diet, the space that you have for gardening (doesn't matter if it's an apartment window! We can help make some magic happen), and realistically, the amount of time that you want to spend gardening and cooking each week.
We'll review your application and will reach out within 7 to 10 business days to let you know if we think we can help, and what the next steps in the process are.
Step 2: We'll be in touch
If we think that we can help you make your garden dreams a reality, your acceptance and onboarding email will include a link to complete a more comprehensive survey, a calendar link to schedule a time for your onboarding call, and a link to make your payment and select your preferred payment option. Payment is due within 3 days to hold your slot.
After you make your first payment or pay in full, you'll be able to schedule a time for your onboarding call within the next 2 weeks. Make sure to complete the comprehensive survey at least 3 days before our onboarding call. Your 4-months of included coaching begins from the day of your onboarding call.
Step 3: Onboarding
After you complete your comprehensive survey, we'll take the time to go through it before our first call to make sure that we're having a productive conversation, so we can get to the heart of how we can best design a garden and build a plan that fits your lifestyle, values, and goals. After our first meeting, we'll get to work on putting together a garden design that meets your unique needs, with an individualized seasonal recipe plan and herbal remedy guide to go along with the plants in your garden.
Step 4: Design
From there, we'll set up a time 2 to 4 weeks after our initial call to go over the design for your garden, recommended plan for installation, and tips and tricks to go along with your personalized recipe and herbal remedy guide.
Step 5: Garden!
You've made it to the last and best stage of this process - getting your hands in the dirt and your garden in the ground! After our design review call, where we'll walk you through the garden that we've designed just for you, to fit your specific space and desires in the kitchen, it's up to you to get started. We'll be here to guide you on the way, with 3 coaching calls where we'll tackle any issues that come up and share tips and tricks for your longer-term garden plans, including how to prepare your garden for the changing seasons and set yourself up for success during the next gardening season. We're here both to answer those harder questions and to reassure you that yes, it's really okay to prune the suckers from your tomato plants, so that you can rest assured that you're doing the most you can to maximize your harvest.
What's included?
We're here to help you make your first gardening season a resounding success. Our design and coaching program for beginner gardeners includes nearly 5 hours of face time with the Eat Rooted team, including almost 2 hours of 1-on-1 calls (a 45-minute onboarding call, and a 1-hour call where we'll go over your garden design and the customized recipe plan or herbal remedy guide that we'll put together just for you) and 3 separate group coaching calls. Each group coaching call will include a 30-minute workshop component based around a different aspect of gardening planning, preparation, and maintenance. The remaining 30 minutes of the call is reserved as a space for gardeners to share knowledge and build community with others who are new to growing their own food, as well as a Q&A with the Eat Rooted team. Each coaching call is limited to the current participants in the Eat Rooted Kitchen Garden cohort.
A personalized garden design for your space, diet, and lifestyle (up to 20 square feet included; let us know if you think your space is bigger than that in the inquiry form)
an implementation plan that lays out step-by-step what you need to do to get your garden in the ground - did you think we were going to leave you to it all alone?
And, depending if you're on either the edible or herbal garden track,
Either one week's worth of plant-based personalized recipes and suggested meal plans that utilize your garden's harvest;
Or, a customized herbal remedy guide including recipes for your recommended herbal protocol, and ways to use the fresh herbs from your garden and preserve them to use outside of the growing season.
Who is this a fit for?
Are you a complete beginner in the garden, or have you been gardening for two years or less?
You're in the right spot! Our custom design and coaching packages are the best fit for complete beginners and individuals with 2 or fewer garden seasons under their belt. We'll help you launch and catapult your garden and harvest with a design specifically for your space and taste. We take into account things like southern exposure, afternoon shade, and what plants are nemeses so that you don't plant them near each other (yes, that's really a thing) so that you don't have to worry that your harvest is at risk.
In this first growing season together, we'll build a solid foundation for you to keep growing on your own. We're here to help you get started - no knowledge required.
How it works:
Can we do this remotely?
You're in luck! Our custom garden design and coaching package is conducted entirely remotely -- meaning that you don't have to ever leave your home to work with us. We have experience growing food across a range of gardening zones, and we work with clients in all zones. Not sure if you're a fit? Reach out at the form below and we'll let you know if we think we can help.
Who are you?
Hi! Thanks for asking. We're glad to have you here.
We're Mairi and Cate - Mairi is a certified Permaculture Designer with PINA (the Permaculture Institute of North America), and completed her Permaculture Design Certification with Boulder Permaculture. Cate has been studying herbalism since 2018 and is working towards becoming a clinical herbalist.
We've been gardening, baking, and cooking throughout our lives, and have been developing vegan, plant-based recipes for over a decade. We've both worked in commercial kitchens and have experience with canning, drying, and freezing to preserve fresh seasonal produce at home.
Cate is an avid forager (Mairi's more of an occasional one) and gardener, and Mairi has developed gardening curriculum and taught gardening and seed saving to individuals of all ages, as well as managed and designed a community garden space. Cate is also the founder of Blueberry Road Botanicals, a science-based herbal skincare line, and has been perfecting her herbal remedy recipes since 2019.
All that to say - we've got you covered when it comes to everything you need to know to get started gardening and using what you grow on the right foot, and that's exactly what we're here to do.
What's the price?
